Danish developer IO Interactive recently unveiled 30 minutes of gameplay footage and the release date for its upcoming title, "007 First Light." However, the game has also drawn criticism, with some suggesting it bears too strong a resemblance to the studio's flagship "Hitman" series.
In response, the team emphasized in a recent interview that "007 First Light" is not merely a "reskin" of "Hitman," but rather a game that offers distinct differences in gameplay and experience.
Speaking with GamesRadar+, Senior Licensing Producer Theuns Smit stated that while IOI's 25 years of experience in stealth and level design certainly form a foundation, the new project takes a different direction.
"The 'Hitman' experience is what it is because we wanted to deliver a specific type of gameplay; '007' is completely different. It's not a reskin of an existing game, but a completely new design," Smit explained.
Smit further noted that the game's driving system presented one of the biggest challenges during development. IOI specifically recruited programmers and designers with racing game backgrounds to handle the coding, tuning, and balancing of vehicle controls.
He elaborated that the team had to strike a delicate balance, ensuring the vehicles felt thrilling, believable, and dangerous, while remaining accessible and fun for a broad audience. "This was a new adventure for us, but ultimately, we feel the results are quite exciting," he added.
For IOI, "007 First Light" marks their first venture into a non-original IP, posing a significant challenge for the team to leave their creative mark on the iconic James Bond character. The development team emphasized their goal is to let players experience a truly game-centric Bond adventure, rather than merely a cinematic adaptation.
"007 First Light" is slated for release on March 27, 2026, across PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC platforms.
