The fourth installment in "The Conjuring" universe's main series, "The Conjuring: Last Rites," reportedly delivered a strong box office performance last week, but behind its success lies a contentious negotiation.
According to a recent report from Puck News, a prequel film is in development, in addition to the previously announced spinoff series that was already in the works prior to the release of "Last Rites." Meanwhile, James Wan, who serves as a co-producer across the entire franchise and directed the first two main installments, has reportedly approached Warner Bros. Pictures with a demand. He is seeking up to 50% of the profits from future "Conjuring" universe projects. This demand, made through his agency CAA, has been a subject of ongoing negotiations with Warner Bros. since his production company, Atomic Monster, was acquired by Blumhouse last year.

However, Warner Bros. has not readily agreed to Wan's terms. The studio reportedly believes Wan's recent involvement in "The Conjuring" universe has been limited, with other producers within Atomic Monster handling many key responsibilities, thus making them reluctant to increase his compensation. Wan later revised his request, proposing 25% for the first sequel and 50% for subsequent projects. Despite this, Warner Bros. remains hesitant, leading Wan to threaten his departure from the franchise.

While sources within Warner Bros. suggest Wan's later contributions to the series have been less substantial, other sources, not affiliated with the studio, contend that Wan remains deeply involved in planning the franchise's direction, offering crucial guidance, and frequently appearing on set to assist.
Richard Brener, head of New Line Cinema—one of the producers of "The Conjuring" universe—echoes Warner Bros.' stance, believing there's no need to pay Wan more for his involvement. Brener reportedly stated firmly that if Wan wishes to retain his producer title in the series, he must provide certain fundamental services, or it would constitute a breach of contract.
