LEGO Builder DeRa Recreates Japanese Masterpiece "Peonies and Peacock" in 3D, Stunning Work to Be Displayed at LEGO House Denmark

For nearly 90 years, LEGO has captivated both kids and adults, offering endless possibilities for creative construction. From intricate Gundam models and robots to even classic paintings, talented builders are constantly pushing the boundaries of what's possible with these versatile bricks.

This time, we're spotlighting a true LEGO wizard: university student and X (formerly Twitter) user DeRa (@deraLEGO). He's gone viral for his incredible 3D LEGO rendition of the famous Japanese painting "Peonies and Peacock," showcasing breathtaking building techniques that have earned widespread admiration online.

DeRa (@deraLEGO) regularly shares his diverse LEGO creations, spanning architecture, machinery, and even biological subjects. He previously made waves by recreating Godzilla from the movie "Godzilla Minus One" entirely out of LEGO bricks.

His latest masterpiece draws inspiration from "Peonies and Peacock" by Maruyama Okyo, a painter from the mid-Edo period. DeRa also mentioned referencing peacock illustrations by artist Ganku, meticulously planning the overall composition and brick count.

A key challenge for DeRa was replicating "urazaishiki," a traditional Japanese painting technique that creates transparency and depth. To capture the shimmering effect of the peacock's tail feathers, he ingeniously used "Satin Trans-Brown" and "Satin Trans-Bright Green" transparent LEGO elements.

While the tail feathers came together smoothly, the intricate body feathers proved to be a real head-scratcher. To evoke Maruyama Okyo's delicate brushwork, DeRa ultimately opted for smooth, round LEGO pieces, cleverly utilizing the shadows created by the gaps between bricks to mimic the underlying ink texture of the original painting.

For the color palette, he chose subdued tones to match the Japanese painting aesthetic: deep blue for the head, olive green for the belly, and a gradient of dark turquoise and bright green. DeRa was so thrilled with the result that he even shared in-progress photos, exclaiming, "This color scheme is absolutely gorgeous!"

This "LEGO Peonies and Peacock" — a stunning blend of dynamic composition and serene colors — is set to be displayed at the LEGO House in Billund, Denmark, starting in September.
