Deadline exclusively reported today that Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese, who has multiple projects in development, has added a new supernatural horror film, "What Happens At Night," with Jennifer Lawrence and his frequent collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio set to star.

Lawrence and DiCaprio, who previously played teacher and student in "Don't Look Up," were almost paired as a couple in a Scorsese film before. Last year, they were slated to portray Frank Sinatra and his second wife, Oscar-nominated Ava Gardner, in Scorsese's planned Sinatra biopic. While that project was put on hold, their on-screen chemistry as a couple clearly remains.

"What Happens At Night" is an adaptation of Peter Cameron's 2020 ghost story novel. It follows an unnamed American couple who travel to an unfamiliar European city to adopt a child. They check into a desolate and eerie hotel, which is home to a mysterious cast of characters: an aging chanteuse, a philandering businessman, and an enigmatic, charming faith healer. Beneath the surface, the hotel and its guests seem to harbor untold secrets. As the couple faces increasing obstacles in their adoption journey, they grow increasingly uncertain about their marriage, themselves, and their lives.

French studio Studiocanal initially acquired the film rights two years ago, and Patrick Marber, known for writing "Closer" and "Notes on a Scandal," had already joined to pen the screenplay. At that time, Scorsese was only attached as a producer, but he has now confirmed he will direct the project. Apple, which financed Scorsese's previous film "Killers of the Flower Moon," will also continue to invest in and participate in the production.
