Last month, Tom Cruise was slated to begin production on "Deeper," a high-stakes underwater film with a reported budget of $275 million, reuniting with director Doug Liman, who previously helmed "Edge of Tomorrow" and "American Made." However, the project hit a snag when financier Warner Bros. Pictures deemed the budget too high, capping their contribution at $230 million. This led to an immediate halt in production. With "Deeper" still searching for a new studio home and additional funding, Liman and Cruise are now reportedly shifting focus to other, more readily available projects.

According to Production Weekly, a site tracking film and TV development, Liman and Cruise are now likely to prioritize the long-gestating sequel to "Edge of Tomorrow." The film is expected to commence principal photography in the latter half of 2026, with Emily Blunt also set to reprise her role. While "Edge of Tomorrow" is also a Warner Bros. property, similar to the stalled "Deeper," the studio's refusal to approve a higher budget for "Deeper" means Cruise may explore developing that project with other studios.
Both Liman and Blunt have previously confirmed that the script for "Edge of Tomorrow 2" is complete. Rumors also suggest that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has been encouraging Cruise to prioritize the "Edge of Tomorrow" sequel since the star signed a new deal with the studio . With Cruise not currently focused on additional "Mission: Impossible" installments, a late 2026 production start for "Edge of Tomorrow 2" appears increasingly feasible.
