Since its premiere, Marvel's "Daredevil: Born Again" has drawn viewer attention to the "striking similarities" between the series' villain, Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, and current U.S. President Donald Trump.
However, during recent interviews at Los Angeles Comic Con, stars Charlie Cox, who plays Daredevil, and Wilson Bethel, who portrays Bullseye, both emphasized that any perceived resemblances were not intentional, but rather "purely coincidental and completely accidental."
The first season of "Daredevil: Born Again" depicts a convicted felon successfully winning an election, then using his power to manipulate law enforcement agencies to target political opponents and exploit his position for personal gain. This storyline has drawn parallels to real-world political scenarios.
In its premiere review, IGN noted that while the idea of a convicted felon being elected might have seemed absurd in the past, in 2025, it felt "ripped straight from the headlines." The review added that the series avoids specific politics, instead focusing on themes of "empowering bullies" and "the responsibility of people to stand up."
Addressing the comparisons between Kingpin and Trump, Cox stated directly that "if anyone sees similarities, it's purely coincidental. Vincent D’Onofrio [who plays Kingpin] created this character back in 2014. If someone had put 'President' and that name together back then, they would have been laughed out of the room."
Wilson Bethel likewise commented that the script for the first season was completed long before the current president was elected. He explained that the series truly explores what happens when power falls into the wrong hands, adding, "There are countless historical examples to draw from, and whether we are currently in one of those situations is up to individual interpretation."
Both actors believe that the intersection of the series with real-world politics was not a deliberate design by the creators, but rather a natural association made by audiences within a specific contemporary atmosphere.
"For ten years, every time there's a Punisher storyline, people ask, 'Is it appropriate to have a gun-wielding hero right now?'" Cox emphasized that these coincidences should be laughed off and enjoyed, but also clearly stated that such associations are "completely accidental."
As production for the second and third seasons is set to begin, "Daredevil: Born Again" is poised to continue sparking deep discussions among viewers about "power and responsibility." While the production team denies any direct real-world parallels, in today's volatile political climate, Kingpin's image will inevitably be projected onto the current political discourse, adding to the series' topicality and sense of realism.
