Taiwanese-American director Justin Lin, a veteran commercial filmmaker known for helming five installments of "The Fast Saga," is making a rare return to independent cinema this month with his low-budget feature, "Last Days," for which the first trailer was just released.

Penned by Ben Ripley, the screenwriter behind "Source Code," the film features a cast including Sky Yang from the "Rebel Moon" franchise, veteran Asian-American actor Ken Leung of the series "Lost," and Toby Wallace from "The Bikeriders." "Last Days" is slated for a North American release on October 24.

"Last Days" is based on the true story of the late missionary John Allen Chau. In 2018, Chau illegally traveled to North Sentinel Island, part of India's Andaman Islands, determined to spread the Christian gospel and convert the Sentinelese people—an indigenous tribe long isolated from the outside world and protected by law from external contact. Shortly after landing, Chau was killed by the Sentinelese with arrows.

The film faced a funding shortfall before production, but fortunately, Keanu Reeves stepped in with financial support, allowing the project to be completed. Subsequently, Reeves also invited Lin to direct his starring role in the Netflix fantasy action film "BRZRKR", which is based on the comic series of the same name, conceived by Reeves himself.
