Created by illustrator Nagano, the adorable world of "Chiikawa" (ちいかわ) exploded onto the scene in 2020, quickly captivating audiences everywhere. With its unique charm, the TV anime adaptation has only cemented its status as a beloved pop culture phenomenon.
Recently, character goods company Gray Parker Service unveiled a new line of plushies: the "Chiikawa Kiramekko Teddy Bear" collection, featuring the cute characters dressed in teddy bear outfits. However, the initial plan to sell them via "blind box" draws sparked outrage among fans. Following a wave of complaints, the company has now announced a switch to "full set pre-orders" only, making it a hot topic online.

The "Chiikawa Kiramekko Teddy Bear" plushie series, which features six different designs, was originally slated for "blind box" sales at 2,420 JPY each. The initial launch was set for October 10th at the "Chiikawa Land Harajuku Store," with online sales to follow.

But as soon as the news dropped, social media erupted. Fans flooded comment sections with criticism: "2,420 JPY for a blind box is ridiculous," "Please stop with these expensive random items," and "This is just paving the way for scalpers; I can already see the sky-high resale prices."

Facing relentless negative feedback, the official team quickly announced a change in sales strategy. The planned physical store launch and general sales have been completely canceled. Instead, the plushies will now be sold exclusively as a "limited pre-order box set of all 6 designs," produced on a made-to-order basis. The company also issued a public apology for the inconvenience caused by their initial sales plan.
This swift pivot earned praise from fans, who appreciated the official team listening to their concerns. Given Chiikawa's immense popularity, merchandise often falls prey to scalpers reselling items far above retail price. This "blind box controversy" only amplified fears of further fueling the resale chaos.
Indeed, the "blind box" sales model has faced increasing criticism in recent years. Perhaps this incident will prompt official distributors to reconsider whether such methods are truly suitable going forward.
