Ridley Scott Slams Modern Cinema: Most Films Are "Absolute Sh*t!" — Director Boasts His Own Work is "Fantastic" and "Timeless"

Fans familiar with director Ridley Scott know he's famously outspoken and never shies away from self-praise, often criticizing others' work mercilessly while unabashedly championing his own. During a recent Q&A session at a British Film Institute retrospective of his work, Scott was asked if he'd seen any new films he liked recently. He promptly slammed most contemporary cinema as "absolute sh*t," so bad that he'd rather rewatch his own productions.

At the event, Scott stated, "There are thousands, not thousands, millions of films being produced around the world now, and the vast majority of them are absolute sh*t! In fact, I think we're now being deluged by a huge amount of mediocrity. So what I do now — which isn't very good — is I've started rewatching my own films, and they're really good, they haven't aged at all." He continued, "I rewatched 'Black Hawk Down' the other night, and I thought, 'How the f*** did I make that?' But I do think good films occasionally emerge, and it's a relief to see that there are still people out there making good movies." Scott also commented that many current films and TV shows rely on post-production special effects to fix issues, making them more expensive, and often lack strong content in the initial scriptwriting phase.

This isn't the only time Scott has recently praised his own work. Last month, during an interview with the film social platform Letterboxd, Scott directly crowned his own "G.I. Jane" as the greatest female-led film of all time. He stated, "Demi [Moore] and I made a very good film called 'G.I. Jane.' I think it's the best female film ever made, even better than my 'Thelma & Louise.' Demi is a great actress and absolutely doesn't tolerate foolish behavior. I thought we didn't get along that well at the time, but in the end, we made... I think it's the best film she's ever made. I remember Bruce [Willis, Moore's ex-husband] also said, 'My God, that's the best film she's ever made.'"
