Last weekend, Taylor Swift brought the "release party" for her latest 12th album, "The Life of a Showgirl," to theaters. The limited three-day engagement immediately drew devoted fans, amassing a global box office of $46 million and successfully claiming the top spot in North America for the week. However, Dwayne Johnson's new biopic, "The Smashing Machine," which premiered the same week, wasn't as fortunate, opening to just $6 million.

"The Smashing Machine" is a major production from indie studio A24, with a budget of $60 million. It stars Johnson, who is typically considered a box office draw, and marks a rare dramatic turn for him as he aims for awards season recognition. Yet, these seemingly appealing factors ultimately failed to attract a sufficient audience. Despite generally positive critical reception, current projections suggest A24 will struggle to break even.

Regarding the film's disappointing box office performance, Johnson recently posted a statement, asserting that the financial outcome will not dampen his commitment to honing his acting craft. He expressed his continued appreciation for the filmmaking experience: "I am deeply grateful to every single person who watched 'The Smashing Machine.' In our storytelling business, you cannot control the box office results, but I realize what you can control is your performance, and your determination to fully immerse yourself in the character and embody other mindsets, and I will always continue to seize such opportunities. I am honored to portray this role for my director Benny Safdie, thank you, my good friend, for trusting me. In fact, this movie changed my life. I am filled with gratitude, respect, and strong empathy."
