Masamune Shirow's manga "Ghost in the Shell" shot to international fame with Mamoru Oshii's 1995 animated film of the same name, cementing its status as a classic in the cyberpunk genre and sci-fi as a whole. Over the past 30+ years, the franchise has seen numerous anime and 3DCG adaptations.
Last May, a new TV anime adaptation was announced, produced by Science SARU, the animation studio founded by producer Eunyoung Choi and director Masaaki Yuasa. Today (October 23), it was confirmed to premiere in 2026, alongside the release of a teaser visual.

Beyond the original manga, the 1995 film spawned a multitude of anime adaptations, including versions directed by Kenji Kamiyama and Mamoru Oshii, and even the recent 3DCG anime "Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045."
Each iteration of "Ghost in the Shell" has consistently garnered widespread acclaim for its outstanding storytelling, high-quality animation, and profound exploration of philosophical and sociological themes. It's widely considered one of the pioneering works that led Japanese animation into the Western market in the 1990s.

This new TV anime, "Ghost in the Shell: The Ghost in the Shell," will be directed for the first time by Moko-chan, who has shown exceptional talent as assistant director on works like "Dandadan." The series composition and screenplay will be handled by sci-fi novelist Toh EnJoe, known for his work on "Godzilla Singular Point." Character design and chief animation director duties fall to Shuhei Handa, who worked on "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" and "Spriggan."
Animation production is by Science SARU. They've delivered critically acclaimed titles such as "Inu-Oh," "Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!," and "Dandadan." With high praise both domestically and internationally, anticipation for their take on GITS is sky-high.
