A new feature report from Variety today, focusing on Skydance Media CEO David Ellison's future plans for the company, has confirmed a major development: Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media have officially abandoned the fourth installment of J.J. Abrams' rebooted "Star Trek" film series. Instead, the studios are now moving forward with a second reboot of the beloved franchise.

The fourth film has languished in development for nine years since the release of "Star Trek Beyond." During this period, the project saw multiple directors and writers attached, and numerous different sequel concepts were explored. Various prequels and spin-offs were also in simultaneous development, but ultimately, none came to fruition.

While Paramount and Skydance did not elaborate on the reasons for the cancellation, members of the cast have hinted at factors over the years. These include escalating production costs and box office returns that failed to meet financial expectations . Additionally, the tragic death of Anton Yelchin, who played Enterprise navigator Chekov, also dampened the enthusiasm of the close-knit cast to return]]. All these elements contributed to the decision. The franchise now officially concludes, marking a final farewell alongside Yelchin, who tragically passed away nine years ago.
