Many netizens out there probably love to draw, with some even eyeing art-related careers like ACG illustrators or character designers.
Recently, Japanese illustrator Inaho Yura (@yura_inaho) shared on X that whenever she draws an "axolotl," she gets absolutely flooded with thank-you messages from Mexican netizens. This made her wonder, "Wait, axolotls are *that* popular in Mexico?" It was then she unexpectedly realized that axolotls are actually an endemic species to Mexico, and this discovery suddenly put her on the radar of Mexican fans.

Inaho Yura's confusion stemmed from the fact that in Japan, axolotls are commonly called "Upa Rupa," which is similar to how they're known in other regions. However, their scientific name is the "Mexican axolotl," and they are indeed an endemic species to Mexico. Sadly, their native population is currently listed as critically endangered.

Many Mexican and Japanese netizens chimed in to educate her, even sharing that the adorable axolotl is featured right on Mexico's 50-peso banknote! Some locals even joked, "They're so cute, people don't want to spend the new bills, which actually slows down currency circulation."

They also highlighted that the Mexican axolotl is currently on the brink of extinction in its native habitat. Due to pollution from development in their original waterways, the wild population might be fewer than 1,000 individuals. Local monasteries and research institutions are actively working on conservation, artificial breeding, and reintroduction efforts.

▼ One netizen even shared photos from a local axolotl research institution in Mexico, where they sell plushies – apparently, they're super popular!

After learning all this, Inaho Yura expressed her delight that her axolotl character, "Usalupa," has unexpectedly spread worldwide. She'd be thrilled if people continue to love the character. She's also collaborated with Bandai on gashapon (capsule toy) merchandise and hopes to deliver these goodies to axolotl enthusiasts across the globe in the future.

Maybe it's the genuinely fun and adorable subject matter that's propelled this illustrator's popularity to unexpected corners of the world – or perhaps that's just the irresistible charm of the axolotl!
