Two years ago, Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro ">revealed that his good friend Tom Cruise was originally considered to play Marshal Stacker Pentecost in the first "Pacific Rim" film, a role ultimately taken by Idris Elba. Del Toro had never publicly explained why Cruise didn't end up in the movie until recently, when he finally shared the reason on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast.

Del Toro recalled on the show, "We almost made 'Pacific Rim' together. He was going to play Stacker Pentecost. My original idea was to have Maverick leading a team (laughs), and we even wrote a karaoke scene similar to 'Great Balls of Fire' from 'Top Gun.' We were so close to making it happen, but in the end, we couldn't finalize the contract. And the reason, believe it or not, was related to home video distribution."

Despite the missed opportunity, del Toro and Cruise have remained in touch. Cruise even sought del Toro's input on his "Mission: Impossible" series, maintaining their friendship off-screen.
