The "28 Years Later" sequel series, a continuation of "28 Days Later," was always envisioned as a trilogy. However, financier Sony Pictures initially only committed to producing the first two installments: "28 Years Later" and "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," which premiered earlier this year. The production of the third film was contingent on the market reception of the first two.
Evidently, Sony is more than satisfied with the performance of the first two films, as Deadline exclusively reported today that the studio has officially greenlit the final chapter of the trilogy. While "The Bone Temple" has already been released, its early screenings garnered excellent reviews, and recent media viewings have continued to draw widespread acclaim, which likely fueled Sony's increased confidence.

Cillian Murphy, star of the original "28 Days Later," was long confirmed to return for this trilogy. He served as an executive producer on both "28 Years Later" and "The Bone Temple," and made a cameo appearance in "The Bone Temple," setting the stage for his official return as the lead in the final installment of the sequel trilogy. Deadline also added today that Murphy has officially entered contract negotiations with Sony.
The director and title for the fifth film have not yet been announced. However, Danny Boyle, who directed the original "28 Days Later" and "28 Years Later," has expressed his willingness to return and complete the trilogy himself. The screenplay, as before, is being penned by Alex Garland, writer of "28 Days Later" and "28 Years Later," as the entire sequel trilogy was originally his brainchild.
