"Mothra" Double Anniversary Project Kicks Off! Toho Declares 2026 "Mothra Year" with Pop-Up Shops & Special Exhibitions

A monster as iconic as "Godzilla" and incredibly popular in Toho's tokusatsu works, "Mothra" is set to hit a double anniversary milestone in 2026: the Heisei Mothra trilogy turns 30, and it's 65 years since her debut in 1961!

To mark this momentous occasion, Toho has officially announced the launch of the 2026 "Mothra Year (モスライヤー/Mothra Year)" project, unveiling a commemorative logo to boot. Get ready for a vibrant array of "kaleidoscopic" merchandise, pop-up shops, and special exhibition events, all gearing up for this epic double anniversary celebration.

Mothra first graced the silver screen in the 1961 film "Mothra." In the movie, she transforms from a larva, cocoons, and finally emerges as a beautiful adult, fighting not only to protect her offspring but also to defend Earth and humanity.

Mothra has been a prominent figure in numerous Godzilla series films, including "Mothra vs. Godzilla" and "Godzilla vs. Mothra." In 1996, she took center stage again with the release of "Mothra," kicking off the Heisei trilogy. With her rounded face, colorful appearance, and a blend of gentleness and power, Mothra stands alongside Godzilla as a beloved Toho signature monster, adored by generations.

To kick off "Mothra Year," the official team has also revealed a brand-new commemorative logo. The logo features massive wings as its central visual, paired with vivid, colorful hues. Building on the momentum of last year's "Burning Godzilla Year," it showcases a "kaleidoscopic" style that promises to keep the Godzilla series buzz alive.

Officials also teased a full rollout of various merchandise, exhibitions, and pop-up shops.
