Vince Zampella, a pivotal figure in the gaming industry known as the co-creator of the "Call of Duty" franchise, co-founder of Respawn Entertainment, and a high-ranking executive at Electronic Arts, has tragically died in a severe car accident in the mountains north of Los Angeles. He was 55.

Reports indicate the fatal incident occurred around 12:45 PM on Sunday on a scenic road in the San Gabriel Mountains. The California Highway Patrol stated that it was a single-vehicle crash where the car veered off the road, struck a concrete barrier, and subsequently caught fire.
Authorities confirmed Zampella was the driver and was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle was transported to the hospital but later succumbed to their injuries; their identity has not yet been released. NBC later updated that the vehicle involved was a 2026 Ferrari 296 GTS, and witnesses provided accident footage to aid the ongoing investigation.
Vince Zampella held an immensely significant place in video game history. In 2003, he co-founded Infinity Ward with Jason West, where they developed the groundbreaking "Call of Duty" series, fundamentally reshaping the landscape of first-person shooter games.

Following a contract dispute with Activision, Zampella departed Infinity Ward and, alongside West, established Respawn Entertainment under Electronic Arts. There, he oversaw the creation of critically acclaimed titles such as "Titanfall," "Titanfall 2," "Apex Legends," and the "Star Wars Jedi" series, solidifying his reputation for innovative game development.
With Respawn's continued success, Zampella steadily rose through the ranks at EA, eventually becoming Group General Manager, a role that included overseeing the development of the "Battlefield" series. In a statement, EA expressed that Zampella was not only an exceptional creator but also an inspirational figure who motivated countless players and developers, ensuring his profound impact on interactive entertainment would endure.
