STRICT-G JAPAN, the sub-brand of the official Gundam fashion label STRICT-G, has consistently offered fresh apparel choices by blending traditional Japanese culture and art into its designs.
They've just announced an exciting collaboration with Usaburo Kokeshi, a renowned kokeshi doll artisan from Gunma Prefecture, Japan, to launch a "Mobile Suit Gundam" kokeshi doll series. These unique collectibles are currently available for pre-order on the Japanese Premium Bandai website.
Kokeshi (こけし) are traditional wooden dolls originating from Japan's Tohoku region. Handcrafted from wood, these folk art pieces, once children's toys and souvenirs, feature simple cylindrical bodies and distinctively enlarged heads, often adorned with a few lines to represent facial features. Historically, they were believed to bring good fortune, ward off evil, or even serve as a child's proxy (子消し). Today, kokeshi are popular decorative items, collector's pieces, and have even evolved into diverse modern designs.
This new kokeshi lineup features iconic Mobile Suit Gundam characters: the "RX-78-2 Gundam," "Char's Zaku II," and the "Mass Production Type Zaku." Despite their compact size, the artisans have meticulously recreated each mobile suit's head sculpt, color scheme, and distinct features.
While their forms are now delightfully rounded and cute, no compromises were made on the intricate details. Handcrafted by Japanese artisans, these dolls perfectly capture the unique characteristics and recognizability of each mobile suit, transforming Gundam's signature hard-edged mechanical aesthetic into a fresh, charming appeal.
