For anyone into collecting models, whether it's scale models or assembly kits, adding a custom paint job is practically an art form. It's especially true for assembly kits – a little paint can really bring them to life.
This time, we're spotlighting YouTube channel "Puramo Tosou Full Scratch Yarou Ze," run by a modeler who shares painting techniques and tool tips. They took on Bandai's 'Figure-rise Standard Amplified' series "Obelisk the Tormentor" and, with just a "partial paint job" and extensive detail modifications, transformed it into something that looks like a high-end, pre-painted collectible. The internet is absolutely losing it over this one!
While this "Obelisk" build from "Puramo Tosou Full Scratch Yarou Ze" actually dropped about half a year ago, it recently resurfaced when the modeler shared their favorite projects of the year. They highlighted this one as their most satisfying build and the one that garnered the most fan reactions, bringing it back into the spotlight.
The modeler explained that the goal wasn't a full repaint. Instead, they focused on utilizing the kit's original molded colors, then enhancing the overall texture and feel through selective painting and intricate detailing.

After assembly, the first step was addressing the kit's shortcomings. This included replacing the sticker eyes with hollowed-out sockets fitted with LED lights, re-scribing the teeth, reshaping the fists and fingers, and meticulously eliminating almost all seam lines.

To amp up the organic feel, they even used a heat pen to carve out muscle fiber textures. Then, a tool cleaning solution and metal brush were employed to create that rough, organic skin texture.
Moving into the paint phase, the modeler first hit the entire piece with a matte clear coat. Then, an airbrush was used to boldly deepen the shadows, making those muscle lines pop even more. Next, a "wash" technique with repeated wiping built up layers of battle damage and depth. Finally, brush painting and dry brushing added highlights, making key areas like the chest and claws truly stand out.

With the LED eyes lit and the entire piece complete, a truly awe-inspiring Obelisk the Tormentor was born – bursting with muscle definition and an overwhelming presence!
