Manga artist Jichu's romantic comedy, "The Two of Them Are Smoking Behind the Supermarket" (Super no Ura de Yani Suu Futari), has garnered significant attention for its charming blend of everyday life and playful male-female interactions. Last year, it was announced that the series would receive a TV anime adaptation.
Today (1/16), the official announcement dropped: the TV anime adaptation is slated to premiere in July 2026! A new key visual and a teaser trailer were also unveiled.
"The Two of Them Are Smoking Behind the Supermarket" was originally titled "A Story About Smoking Behind the Supermarket" (Super no Ura de Yani Suu Hanashi) when it first debuted. It was initially posted on author Jichu's X (formerly Twitter) in March 2022 before beginning serialization in Monthly Big Gangan.
The story follows Sasaki, a weary office worker grinding through his corporate slave life. After work, he often stops by the supermarket, solely to catch a glimpse of Ms. Yamada at register number two, finding solace in her smile. One day, when he can't find Yamada, he unexpectedly encounters another store employee, "Ms. Tayama," behind the supermarket and she invites him to smoke with her. Little does Sasaki know the true identity of "Ms. Tayama"...
The teaser visual features Sasaki (CV: Takuya Sato) and Tayama (CV: Kana Hoshiki) chilling in the supermarket's back alley smoking area, each with a cigarette in hand. Despite sitting shoulder-to-shoulder, their gazes drift in opposite directions, perfectly capturing that "close yet distant" adult vibe that just oozes off the screen. Plus, the anime's art style looks super faithful to the manga!
The newly released teaser PV dives into Sasaki's daily grind: swamped with work, utterly exhausted, and his routine stop at the supermarket after hours. Unable to find a spot to smoke, he lets out a sigh, only for the mysterious Tayama to appear and lead him to the supermarket's back smoking zone. As they share a smoke, Tayama softly invites him, "Come again next time, Mr. Sasaki." For a slightly shy Sasaki, that moment marks the quiet beginning of their budding relationship.
