Still going strong after more than two decades, Final Fantasy XI, the first online game in the iconic Final Fantasy series, continues to boast a surprisingly active player base, cementing its status as a true evergreen MMORPG.
However, a recent announcement from the Japanese official team regarding a game bug has sent ripples of amusement and respect across the community. It turns out that Notorious Monsters (NMs) in the game were endlessly respawning due to a bug, wreaking havoc on internal statistics and treasure chest mechanics. The wild part? The official solution: Game Masters (GMs) will personally hunt down and defeat them all! This "hardcore" approach has naturally gone viral in Japan.

The saga began with a bug report on January 28. The announcement detailed an issue within the game's "Limbus" map, where elite monsters (NMs) that should have been defeated were reappearing. NMs are a big deal, dropping rare materials, equipment, and tons of EXP. Normally, once an NM is defeated, it won't respawn within the same statistical period, only reappearing in the next cycle.
While a temporary fix for the bug itself has already been implemented, the system currently can't differentiate between NMs that were "never defeated" and those "force-respawned by the bug." Therefore, the official decision is to simply consider all NMs for this period as already defeated.
But here's where it gets truly mind-boggling: how exactly will this be achieved? The official statement declared that to ensure all NMs are in an "already defeated" state, Game Masters (GMs) will personally patrol each world and take down every single NM.
The scheduled time for this unprecedented operation is January 30, from 10:00 AM to 11:59 PM (JST). This almost unheard-of "manual labor" approach has certainly caught the attention of many players. It's going to create a truly surreal scene: GMs traversing various worlds, hand-clearing NMs one by one. Many players are eager to witness this spectacle, and this "hardcore to the core" solution has quickly become a hot topic.

This unique method quickly went viral on X (formerly Twitter). The idea of official GMs personally descending to hunt monsters has everyone hyped for the in-game scenes on January 30. It's 2026, and we're seeing an online game tackle a bug with manual intervention – it's both hardcore and wonderfully retro. Major props to the operations team for this!
