The "28 Years Later" trilogy, a sequel series to "28 Days Later," has already seen two installments released. The first two films of this new trilogy were shot back-to-back, and the final installment was officially announced to be in development even before the second film, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," hit theaters. However, with "The Bone Temple" facing a sharp decline in box office performance, many are questioning whether the final film will move forward as planned.

The first film of the new trilogy, "28 Years Later," performed well upon its release last year, earning over $151 million worldwide against a mid-range budget of $60 million. In stark contrast, the second film of the new trilogy, "The Bone Temple," saw a massive drop-off, grossing only $57.58 million globally—a truly alarming decline. Some speculate this was due to the polarizing reception of the previous film, with audience dissatisfaction potentially reducing their willingness to support the follow-up. Others suggest that the mere six-month gap between the two releases made it difficult to generate sufficient buzz for "The Bone Temple."
Regardless of the reasons, the dismal box office performance of the latest film is undeniable. According to reports from the entertainment news outlet World of Reel, Sony Pictures is currently in no rush to greenlight a fifth installment. World of Reel further noted that Netflix has expressed interest in acquiring the distribution rights for the next sequel. However, director Danny Boyle, who helmed "28 Days Later" and the first "28 Years Later" film and is slated to return for the final chapter, is reportedly resistant, insisting that the concluding film must have a theatrical release.
