Last July, with the release of Volume 45, it was announced that Volume 46 would be the final installment. Now, on March 19, the official "Space Brothers" X (formerly Twitter) account confirmed that the series has just three chapters left before its grand finale, bringing an end to its remarkable 19-year serialization that began in 2007. Fans can also mark their calendars: the ultimate Volume 46 is set to hit shelves on July 23.
"Space Brothers" kicked off its serialization in Kodansha's Morning manga magazine in December 2007. The story centers on brothers Mutta Nanba and Hibito Nanba, who, as children, serendipitously witnessed a UFO heading for the moon and made a pact to become astronauts together someday.
Fast forward to 2025: Hibito has achieved his dream, becoming an astronaut and participating in humanity's first long-term lunar mission. Meanwhile, his older brother Mutta finds himself unemployed after being fired from his company. But a single message from Hibito reignites Mutta's own dormant dream of venturing into space.
The official announcement excitedly declared: "Space Brothers will conclude in just 3 more chapters, with the final Volume 46 confirmed for release on July 23! From its serialization start in 2007 to now, it's been 19 years. Please join us in witnessing the final chapter of the brothers' dreams and promises!"
When Volume 45 was released, creator Chūya Koyama shared his thoughts: "The next volume will be the last, and we're just a tiny bit away from the true ending. To think I started drawing this series for so many years based on my editor's suggestion, despite not being particularly interested in space myself, I have a very special attachment to this work. I hope everyone enjoys the final story, please wait for me to finish it properly!"
