Fans of illustrator NAGANO's beloved "Chiikawa" series were thrilled last November when the first-ever theatrical anime, "Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island" (tentative title: 映画ちいかわ 人魚の島のひみつ), was announced.
Today (March 19), the official channels dropped a brand-new 60-second teaser packed with fresh footage, alongside details on movie tickets and a lineup of limited-edition perks. Mark your calendars: the film hits the big screen on July 24, 2026, and fans are already buzzing!
The "Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island" movie adapts NAGANO-sensei's special long-form "Mermaid Island Arc," created specifically for the film. This unique, extended storyline was a massive hit in the original work, trending every time a new chapter dropped and becoming one of the most iconic arcs for fans.
This new 60-second teaser builds on the previous 30-second preview with added scenes. The adventure kicks off when a flyer lands on Usagi, sparking Hachiware's intense curiosity. Soon, Hachiware and Chiikawa decide to embark on a journey to a mysterious island. Usagi is absolutely ecstatic as the trio sets sail, while Chiikawa is already diligently preparing for the "Weeding Certification Level 5" exam—a hilarious contrast that makes the whole preview even more charming.
The overall visuals show a significant upgrade in quality, which is to be expected for a feature film compared to the two-minute TV anime episodes. This only makes us more hyped for the official release!
