Lord and Miller Reveal Live-Action "Spider-Man" Offer, Discuss Scrapped "The Flash" Plans and "Beyond the Spider-Verse" Progress

Filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who earned critical acclaim and box office success with "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" and "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," recently offered rare insights during an interview. They revealed receiving an offer to direct a live-action "Spider-Man" film, discussed their unrealized vision for "The Flash," and provided an update on the highly anticipated "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse."

When asked by the host if they had ever been approached to helm a live-action Spider-Man movie, Miller directly responded, "Yes, we've always loved the character." However, the pair remained tight-lipped about specific project details, only addressing the question with humor and declining to elaborate further on any related works.

Following Sony Pictures' recent releases like "Morbius" and "Madame Web," which received poor reviews, there's been a growing public demand for Lord and Miller to take over the live-action Spider-Man universe.

During the interview, the two also reflected on their past involvement with "The Flash" project. Miller stated they had "a very complete and satisfying idea" at the time, while Lord described their version as "very different from the version that eventually hit theaters." He admitted, "It was a good idea, and I'm a little worried we won't get to use it again," but did not disclose specific details.

In fact, Lord and Miller's connection to "The Flash" dates back even further. In 2015, they were initially invited to direct the film and completed a story outline that served as a crucial foundation for subsequent development. However, they ultimately chose to pivot to "Solo: A Star Wars Story," leading to the project being handed over to other teams.

Subsequently, "The Flash" underwent numerous creative changes, including a new version proposed by Ezra Miller and Grant Morrison, and creative differences between directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, ultimately resulting in a version vastly different from the original concept.

Regarding the future of the animated series, "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse" is currently slated for a June 2027 release. Miller noted that production is progressing smoothly and emphasized that this installment will be the most emotionally resonant chapter of the trilogy. He revealed that the team has incorporated digital pre-visualization technology from "Project Hail Mary" and collaborated with cinematographers to achieve more creative and natural camera movements, further enhancing the animation's expressive power.

Furthermore, concerning rumors of "Spider-Gwen" and "Spider-Punk" spin-off projects, Lord briefly responded that "those projects are moving forward," but did not confirm his direct involvement. The duo also revealed that the main "Spider-Man" animated universe storyline will conclude with "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse."

As for their future direction, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller expressed a continued preference for developing original works. With the MCU's Peter Parker firmly established, the likelihood of them directing a live-action Spider-Man film is generally considered to be decreasing. However, if they were to spearhead new spin-off initiatives, it is still seen as a significant opportunity to revitalize the reputation of related projects.
