"Ikebe Pokémon Center Stabbing": Suspect Opposed Victim's Job at Pokémon Center, Leading to Breakup and Alleged Murder

New details have emerged in the stabbing incident at the Pokémon Center in Ikebukuro Sunshine City, Tokyo, Japan. Police investigations reveal that the 21-year-old victim, Moe Harukawa, and the 26-year-old suspect, Daiki Hirokawa, were previously in a relationship. Before their breakup, Hirokawa reportedly demanded that Harukawa quit her job at the Pokémon Center, which led Harukawa to end the relationship. Authorities believe the suspect's obsession intensified unilaterally after the breakup, ultimately leading to the fatal stabbing.

The incident occurred around 7:20 PM JST on March 26, 2026, at the Pokémon Center located on the second floor of Sunshine City in Higashi-Ikebukuro, Toshima Ward, Tokyo. While working at the store, Moe Harukawa was stabbed by Hirokawa in the neck and other areas, sustaining critical injuries on the spot. She later died after being transported to the hospital. Hirokawa also stabbed himself in the neck at the scene and was later pronounced dead.

Police noted that Harukawa had left a fast-food restaurant in Hachioji City in July 2025 to work at the Pokémon Center. It is understood that the fast-food restaurant was a place where both individuals had previously worked. Harukawa had told police that during her job transition, Hirokawa opposed her working at the Pokémon Center, stating, "A part-time job at the Pokémon Center isn't suitable for you; quit it." This led Harukawa to decide to break up with him.

Following the breakup, Hirokawa continued to stalk and harass Harukawa. In December of last year, police arrested Hirokawa for violating the Stalker Regulation Act and issued a restraining order against him. In January of this year, Hirokawa was released after a summary indictment. Police had also recommended psychological counseling, but he refused.

Furthermore, Harukawa had reportedly told acquaintances that working at the Pokémon Center was her dream, which is why she chose to continue her employment despite the harassment. Police currently believe that Hirokawa's obsession intensified unilaterally after the breakup, ultimately leading to the crime. Investigations into the detailed motives and circumstances of the incident are ongoing.
