Antonio Banderas, who has navigated both the Spanish film industry and Hollywood for decades, has portrayed heroes, villains, and morally ambiguous characters throughout his extensive career, never truly being typecast. Yet, even with his diverse range, Banderas recently revealed in an interview with "The Times" that he almost found himself confined to a specific screen image when he first arrived in Hollywood.

Banderas recounted how, in his youth, he considered Hollywood "forbidden territory for Spaniards." When he first broke into the industry, he was told, "You come here, you're treated like Black people and Hispanics; you're here to play villains." However, within a few years, Banderas quickly dismantled that stereotype with his performances. "The thing is," he explained, "a few years later, I was on the big screen wearing a mask, a hat, a sword, and a cape — referring to 'The Mask of Zorro' — while the villain was the blond, blue-eyed Captain Love. Most importantly, I also voiced 'Puss in Boots,' a character for children. They see a cat with a Spanish accent, an Andalusian accent at that, and he's a good guy."
