Rumors are swirling that Disney may be looking to acquire Epic Games, the developer behind "Fortnite," as part of a broader strategy to expand its digital entertainment footprint. Tech journalist Alex Heath, formerly deputy editor at The Verge, revealed on "The Town with Matt Belloni" podcast that high-level discussions about a potential Epic Games acquisition have already occurred within Disney, with the concept gaining traction despite some internal disagreements.

Disney and Epic Games share a long-standing collaborative history. Epic's Unreal Engine technology has been instrumental in Disney theme park attractions and various film and television productions, including "Star Wars." Furthermore, "Fortnite" has frequently featured crossover events with major Disney-owned IPs such as Marvel and "Star Wars." In February 2024, Disney deepened this partnership by announcing a $1.5 billion investment to acquire an equity stake in Epic Games, with the stated goal of building a persistent "games and entertainment universe" connected to "Fortnite."
Heath stated, "I'm certain there are high-level executives within Disney who want to acquire Epic; they're just waiting for the right moment." He also pointed out, however, that some within the company still view such an acquisition as too risky, suggesting a lack of internal consensus.

The podcast host further disclosed that new Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro is a strong proponent of the Epic partnership, especially regarding the companies' plans to build an open-world entertainment experience within "Fortnite." D'Amaro reportedly views this collaboration as a vital core for Disney's future interactive entertainment, potentially integrating with Disney+ to offer gaming, social, and shopping features.
Heath additionally highlighted that an Epic Games acquisition would grant Disney ownership of the Unreal Engine technology, in addition to "Fortnite." Given Unreal Engine's widespread use in film and television production—including acclaimed series like "The Mandalorian"—this would significantly bolster Disney's integrated development across its film, television, and gaming divisions.
Ultimately, however, Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney retains controlling voting rights, meaning any potential sale of the company hinges entirely on his personal decision. Despite Epic's recent announcement of over 1,000 layoffs and ongoing fluctuations in player activity, "Fortnite" continues to be a pivotal entertainment platform for younger demographics. Industry observers suggest that if a full acquisition or deeper partnership were to materialize, it could significantly challenge platforms like Roblox and fundamentally reshape the digital entertainment market.
