Following its summer release last year, "Weapons," the original horror film written and directed by "Barbarian" filmmaker Zach Cregger, quickly became a sensation. The film not only grossed an impressive $270 million worldwide but also launched veteran actress Amy Madigan, who portrayed the villainous "Witch Gladys," onto the Oscar stage, where she secured her first Best Supporting Actress award.

Given the film's unexpectedly enthusiastic reception, Cregger revealed last year his intention to develop a prequel entirely focused on Gladys. Now, it appears this prequel won't be long in coming, as progress is already underway.

This morning, Deadline reported that Zach Shields, co-screenwriter of "Krampus," has officially joined Zach Cregger to co-write Gladys's standalone prequel. Shields's extensive resume includes numerous monster and horror films; he previously collaborated with "Krampus" director Michael Dougherty on a series of "Trick 'r Treat" shorts and also served as a co-screenwriter for "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" and "Godzilla vs. Kong."

The genesis of the Gladys prequel stems from an original chapter within the "Weapons" script that was ultimately cut during development due to runtime considerations. Now, the story from that chapter will be spun off independently and expanded into a full-length feature film.
