Halle Bailey, who transitioned from music to acting for the live-action "The Little Mermaid" film, faced considerable backlash from audiences for her portrayal of Ariel. Some of these comments were so intense they bordered on racist attacks.
Now, three years after the live-action "The Little Mermaid" first hit theaters, Bailey recently opened up about the experience in an interview with The Independent while promoting her new film, "You, Me & Tuscany." She told the outlet that her time on "The Little Mermaid" was a beautiful experience that taught her to listen to her inner voice, to the good sounds, and how to block out the external noise.

Bailey further explained that being at the center of such a diverse and often conflicting conversation felt incredibly freeing, almost like an experiment. She likened it to observing herself in a cup, watching how people reacted.
Bailey also credited Zendaya, Ariana Grande, and Rachel Zegler — who has also faced casting controversy for her upcoming live-action "Snow White" film — for helping her through that time. She explained that as women, they create a small protective shield for each other, especially when seeing peers endure public scrutiny. Bailey noted her affection for Zegler, stating they both understood the vulnerability of such situations. She elaborated that they are all young women who sometimes lack confidence and feel insecure, and that external opinions can often disrupt one's thoughts. Having a support system that affirms, 'You're great, we support you,' was, she said, a truly special experience.
