Universal Pictures has announced a significant reshuffle of its upcoming slate, impacting two major legacy IPs. First up, the highly anticipated fourth installment of "The Mummy," starring returning leads Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, has seen its release date moved up a full year. Originally slated for May 19, 2028, the film will now hit theaters nearly seven months earlier on October 15, 2027.

Production on "The Mummy 4" is slated to begin this fall, with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directing duo behind "Scream" (2022) and "Scream VI," taking the helm. David Coggeshall, a co-writer for the "Scream" television series, is penning the script. Alongside Weisz and Fraser, John Hannah, who portrayed Rachel Weisz's brother Jonathan Carnahan in the original trilogy, is also confirmed to rejoin the cast.

The other project impacted by the schedule change is "Miami Vice '85," the new "Miami Vice" film from "Top Gun: Maverick" director Joseph Kosinski. Originally set for August 6, 2027, the reboot will now premiere on May 19, 2028, taking over "The Mummy 4"'s previous slot.

As previously announced, "Miami Vice '85" will star Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler. True to its title, the film is set in 1985. "Nightcrawler" director Dan Gilroy and "Top Gun: Maverick" co-writer Eric Warren Singer are co-writing the screenplay. Award-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda (pictured above), a frequent collaborator with Kosinski on projects like "Top Gun: Maverick" and the upcoming "F1" film, is set to shoot the movie using IMAX cameras.
