Some film enthusiasts may recall that in 2014, director Quentin Tarantino made a rare foray into the comic book world, collaborating with artist Matt Wagner on a seven-issue limited series titled "Django / Zorro." The series' major draw was uniting Django, the protagonist from Tarantino's original Western film "Django Unchained," with Diego, the original Zorro from the "Zorro" franchise, in a single story where they teamed up to fight injustice in the Old West.

Now, according to an exclusive report from Deadline today, this dream crossover, previously confined to the comic book universe, is officially heading to the big screen. Tarantino has given Sony Pictures his blessing for a film adaptation, and Sony has already tapped Brian Helgeland, the director behind "Legend" and "A Knight's Tale," to pen the screenplay.

Strictly speaking, Sony's project isn't a direct adaptation but rather a sequel to the comic series, continuing its storyline. However, Tarantino will not return to direct the film himself. This marks the second time he has handed over the reins of a spin-off from one of his directed films, following the "Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood" spin-off, "The Adventures of Cliff Booth." A new director for the project has not yet been announced.
