GTO Returns! Takashi Sorimachi Reprises Role After 28 Years, 50-Year-Old Onizuka Tackles Digital-Age Education

Get ready for a blast from the past! The iconic school drama "GTO," starring Takashi Sorimachi, is officially making a comeback as a full-fledged series on July 20, 2026. That's a whopping 28 years after its original run in 1998! The official announcement dropped a brand-new poster, showcasing "Eikichi Onizuka" with three distinct expressions—a smile, a roar, and a pensive look in the rain—perfectly capturing his enduring struggle and unwavering spirit in the world of education.

Based on Tohru Fujisawa's manga of the same name, "GTO" follows the unconventional former biker gang leader turned teacher, Eikichi Onizuka, as he tackles student problems with his unique, rule-breaking methods. The 1998 series was a smash hit, pulling in an average viewership rating of 28.5% and peaking at an incredible 35.7%, cementing its status as a defining school drama of the Heisei era. Even the 2024 special, "GTO Revival," proved its lasting appeal, racking up over 4.3 million views on TVer and reigniting the hype.

The new "GTO" series is set to carry on the original's spirit, but with a modern twist. The story unfolds at "Seishin Academy," a school that's gone fully digital. Students can now anonymously evaluate teachers, even influencing their job security. In this hyper-efficient, data-driven environment, genuine communication between teachers and students has become a rarity. Enter 52-year-old Eikichi Onizuka, now a homeroom teacher, whose straightforward and impulsive style is ironically seen as a risk.

Behind the scenes, the dream team is back! Screenwriter Kazuhiko Yukawa, director Satoru Nakajima, and producer Kazuhisa Ando are all returning. Takashi Sorimachi shared his excitement about taking on the challenge of portraying a "50-something Onizuka," a phase never explored in the original manga, and figuring out how the character connects with students in today's society.

He also mentioned that seeing three generations of families watching "GTO Revival" together was a significant motivator for bringing the series back. The new season aims to explore the core question of "What is a Great Teacher," striving to redefine the legendary educator's value and meaning in the Reiwa era.
