Tom Cruise recently concluded a significant chapter for Ethan Hunt in "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One," but that doesn't mean he's lost interest in other spy thrillers. Veteran entertainment journalist Jeff Sneider reported on his blog, The InSneider, that Cruise is in private discussions with Paramount Pictures, the studio behind "Mission: Impossible," to launch a new original spy film series.

The project Cruise is reportedly eyeing is "Doppelgänger," a script Paramount acquired last year. It was penned by "Searching" director Aneesh Chaganty and Dan Frey, co-writer of "Descendants: The Rise of Red." Chaganty is also set to direct, with "Black Panther" franchise director Ryan Coogler on board as a producer. Sources indicate that Chaganty is actively rewriting the script to meet Cruise's specifications, with the star expected to officially sign on once he is fully satisfied.

If the collaboration moves forward, Cruise would portray Will, a CIA operative. One day, he's called into his superior's office and informed that the Russian government has found someone in Brazil who looks exactly like him. Russia plans to train this doppelgänger to become Will, eliminate the real Will, and then use the imposter to infiltrate the CIA. However, the CIA aims to preempt this by sending Will to replace the Brazilian doppelgänger first. This way, the Russians would unknowingly recruit the real Will, allowing the U.S. to feed false intelligence to Russia. The twist: it turns out there are even more Will doppelgängers in the world, sparking a global race to control these identical operatives.
The film is reportedly not a straightforward action flick but rather a character study, exploring how individuals perceive the world and how the world perceives them. In early drafts, Will had three doppelgängers, making a total of four identical individuals, though the final script may introduce further variations.
