Two months after reports suggested Fala Chen and Zhang Ziyi would star in Ang Lee's next film, "Gold Mountain," production has officially commenced with a newly announced cast—notably without the two actresses. It appears they have either exited the project or the initial casting news was merely a rumor.
The film's currently announced cast includes: two Asian child actors, Chedi Chang and Sophia Xu; Thai actor Yao, who played the grocery store owner Bo in "Sinners"; Taiwanese actress Zine Tseng, who gained prominence from the Netflix series "3 Body Problem"; and Owen Teague, who starred as the ape protagonist Noa in "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes."

"Gold Mountain" is an adaptation of Chinese-American author C. Pam Zhang's debut novel from six years ago, "How Much of These Hills Is Gold." The film is set during the end of the American Gold Rush and follows two recently orphaned Asian immigrant children. To bury their father, they must journey across the treacherous California frontier while trying to escape the shadows of their past. Along the way, they uncover family secrets, face sibling rivalries, and glimpse a different future for themselves.
Emmanuel Lubezki, the three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer of "Birdman" and "The Revenant," was originally attached as the director of photography but has since been replaced by Joshua James Richards, the cinematographer behind "Nomadland."
The screenplay is penned by Korean screenwriter Hansol Jung of the Apple TV+ series "Pachinko." The film has a production budget of approximately $30 million.
