Capcom Once Regretted Revealing Pragmata Too Early, but Director Says Fan Expectations Became the Team’s Driving Force

Capcom’s sci-fi action-adventure title Pragmata was released in April 2026, but the game was first unveiled much earlier in June 2020, with the company initially even targeting a 2022 launch. After a prolonged development cycle and multiple delays, the team eventually found itself under pressure from having announced the project so early. In a recent interview, director Cho Yonghee admitted that, to some extent, he really did regret it.

Speaking in the interview, Cho Yonghee and producer Naoto Koyama looked back on Pragmata’s development history and discussed the impact that first reveal trailer had inside Capcom. That early footage featured a version of Diana that looked noticeably different from the final game, while also sparking strong interest in the new IP. According to Cho, however, the team had not expected players to respond with quite that level of excitement.

He explained that the developers originally just wanted to make a fun and engaging game. But once they saw how high expectations had become, they quickly realized that simply delivering “a good game” would no longer be enough. They needed to build something even better than they had first envisioned, and that made the early reveal a source of pressure that followed the team throughout development.

Some overseas media outlets compared the situation to Bethesda’s early announcement of The Elder Scrolls VI, which left Todd Howard answering progress questions for years. Looking back, Cho admitted there was some regret. Even so, he stressed that the trailer and the reaction it generated ultimately had a positive effect on the team.

Cho said that even after so much time had passed since the original reveal, players continued to keep an eye on Pragmata, and that support gave the team a major boost. It helped maintain morale during the game’s long development cycle, and in a way, that early wave of enthusiasm became one of the key forces that carried the project through to completion.

He went on to say that without that original trailer, the current version of Pragmata likely would not exist in its present form. While the early reveal did bring pressure and some regrets, player expectations also pushed the team to rethink the game’s scale and quality, ultimately helping this new IP evolve into a more complete experience.
