SONNE, the watch brand renowned for its exquisite Japanese craftsmanship, and its mechanical watch sub-brand, S-MEISTER, previously teamed up with the hit anime "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba" for a popular collaboration featuring mechanical watches inspired by the Upper Rank Three Demon of the Infinity Castle.
Now, they're back with another epic collaboration, this time celebrating the 30th anniversary of "Neon Genesis Evangelion"! Get ready for a stunning series of mechanical wristwatches that blend traditional Japanese "raden" craftsmanship with iconic EVA designs. Three models will be available, themed after Unit-01, Unit-02, and Unit-00. Pre-orders kick off on June 12, 2026, with the official release slated for June 26.
For the uninitiated, "raden" is a decorative art form where iridescent shell or mother-of-pearl is inlaid onto the surface of an object, creating a shimmering, often silvery-purple glow. While originating in China, it developed its own distinct style after being introduced to Japan and is now a highly sought-after collectible.
This collaboration brings in Takeshi Musashigawa, the fourth-generation master of Musashigawa Kobo, a traditional lacquerware workshop from Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture. Takaoka lacquerware boasts over 400 years of history, dating back to 1609, and is recognized as a national traditional craft of Japan. Musashigawa Kobo, founded in 1910, has long preserved raden and lacquer art techniques. In recent years, the workshop has actively sought to merge traditional craftsmanship with modern design, leading to this exciting "Evangelion" partnership.
Through incredibly intricate thin-shell cutting and inlay techniques, Takeshi Musashigawa has meticulously recreated the complex patterns and color schemes of the EVA units on the tiny watch dials, sparking a unique fusion of traditional art and anime culture.
All three models are themed after Unit-01, Unit-02, and Unit-00, with their distinctive EVA unit characteristics brought to life on the dials through traditional Japanese raden craftsmanship.
Each watch features a transparent case back, allowing you to admire the intricate mechanical movement, and is also embossed with the iconic NERV logo. Powering these timepieces is a Japanese-made MIYOTA automatic movement, complemented by a calfskin leather strap in a matching color.
