A Must-Visit for Plushie Parents! World's First Plushie Shrine Opens to Honor Beloved Companions

Japan has been swept up in a "nui-katsu" (plushie activities) craze in recent years! It's all about integrating your beloved stuffed companions into daily life – think hanging them on your bag, taking them on adventures to scenic spots and gourmet restaurants, or even snuggling up with them at bedtime.

This lifestyle trend transcends age and gender, becoming a vital source of comfort and healing for many. Naturally, a whole new wave of related services has sprung up to support this adorable phenomenon.

Nestled in Miyama-cho, Nantan City, Kyoto, the "Plushie Shrine" (ぬいぐるみ神社) proudly claims the title of the world's first, founded by a dedicated "plushie hospital" specializing in the repair and cleaning of stuffed animals.

While the hospital has long committed itself to mending beloved plushies, even the most meticulous repairs can't prevent the inevitable moment when a cherished companion, after years of adventures, can no longer be fixed. To offer owners a meaningful way to express gratitude and bid a proper farewell to their irreplaceable friends, the hospital conceived the idea of creating this unique shrine.

The shrine's architectural design is packed with thoughtful touches: its wooden torii gate is adorned with adorable ears, and the windows of the main hall are specially shaped like little bears. Beyond offering a charming space for visitors to bring their plushies for blessings and photo ops, the shrine also provides "plushie memorial services" (ぬいぐるみ供養). These purification and memorial rituals are held for stuffed companions that are too damaged to continue their journey with their owners.

Looking ahead, the shrine plans to construct a "Spirit Doll Tower" (納ぬい堂), a groundbreaking concept that reimagines traditional memorial practices. After a formal memorial service and cremation, the ashes of the plushies will be respectfully enshrined within the tower. This will allow owners to return and pay their respects, ensuring that their love and gratitude for their cherished companions can endure for years to come!
