WGA Unleashes Legal Challenge Against Paramount Global-Skydance Merger: Union Warns of Reduced Output, Suppressed Wages

A proposed major Hollywood merger, specifically the acquisition of Paramount Global by Skydance Media, continues to face significant industry backlash. Today, the Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) and the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) jointly filed a lawsuit seeking to block the deal. The unions allege that the merger violates federal antitrust laws and, if it proceeds, will likely reduce content production and suppress writers' salaries, thereby harming the interests of union members.

The Writers Guilds are not the only groups opposing the acquisition. Previously, more than 5,500 industry professionals, including Ben Stiller and Mark Ruffalo, launched a major petition campaign to resist the deal. Additionally, 12 state attorneys general, including those from California and New York, had been preparing antitrust lawsuits since last month and formally submitted their filings yesterday. Their concerns largely align with the WGA's: fears that the acquisition will lead to content consolidation, limit creative themes due to perceived political leanings, and drastically reduce employment opportunities across the industry.

The companies involved in the proposed merger swiftly responded to the Writers Guilds' lawsuit today, reiterating their commitment to maintaining production levels, increasing job opportunities, releasing at least 30 films annually, and ensuring a 45-day theatrical window. These responses echo previous statements made by the companies, which have been met with ongoing skepticism from industry professionals, leading them to repeatedly assert the same assurances.
