Maggie Gyllenhaal, who has successfully transitioned from actress to director with her acclaimed films "The Lost Daughter" and "The Bride!", is set to preside over the main competition jury at this year's Venice Film Festival. Beyond her jury duties, Gyllenhaal will also premiere a new work at the festival: "Flesh Impact," a 17-minute short film centered on the iconic Marilyn Monroe.

Stills from the film (pictured above) were recently released via Vanity Fair. "Flesh Impact" is described as a semi-fictional, semi-biographical exploration of Monroe's life. Dakota Johnson, who previously collaborated with Gyllenhaal on "The Lost Daughter," portrays Monroe in her younger years. Veteran Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn takes on the role of Monroe in old age, a period the star tragically never lived to experience.
"Flesh Impact" makes a bold assumption, imagining how Monroe's life and career might have unfolded had she not died prematurely. Coincidentally, Burstyn, who portrays the older Monroe, will also be honored at this year's Venice Film Festival with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
