On July 24th, a brand-new anime in the "Mobile Suit Gundam" series, "Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO" (pronounced Alex Zero), was officially announced for a 2027 release. With Kenji Kamiyama at the helm as director and series composer, fans are already buzzing with excitement.
But it's the protagonist's Mobile Suit, the "Gundam ZERO," that's truly set the internet ablaze! The new key visual, released simultaneously by the official channels, showcases a uniquely designed Mobile Suit. Its right arm, in particular, has countless netizens exclaiming, "What in the world is that thing?!" — instantly becoming a hot topic.

"Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO" is an anime project that shares a universe with the game "GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT," which was unveiled at Summer Game Fest in June 2026. This ambitious cross-media endeavor, spanning both anime and games, has been dubbed the "RG Project" by the official team.
The "RG Project" boasts a unique core concept: both the anime and game share the same history and world-building, but they tell their stories from different timelines and character perspectives, ultimately piecing together a complete historical narrative. The anime's story is set approximately 100 years before the game's plot, exploring the very genesis of this world. The game, on the other hand, takes place in the era following the anime's events, allowing players to dive into this history firsthand, make new choices, and experience how the world evolves based on their actions.

The official reveal dropped a teaser visual featuring protagonist Azumi Lei and his Mobile Suit, Gundam ZERO. What's really got everyone talking, though, is the protagonist suit's utterly mysterious design: a flowing cape, a left arm wrapped in bandages – it's a look completely unlike any Mobile Suit we've seen in previous Gundam titles.

Japanese netizens flooded the comments section about the visual's design, with reactions like: "A Gundam with a cape AND bandages? My inner chuunibyou is absolutely screaming – so cool!" "What IS that protagonist suit's right arm? It looks nothing like a machine." "The protagonist suit's right arm looks like something a villain would have. Did it fuse with an enemy or something?"

▼ Of course, artists are already hard at work, especially on that striking visual!

And speaking of that "mysterious right arm," official design images for Gundam ZERO actually show a right arm that looks completely different from the dark, enigmatic one in the key visual. It appears to be an external attachment, which only fuels curiosity about what secrets it might be hiding.

Naturally, all these questions await further official announcements. However, this new Gundam project, brought to life by director Kenji Kamiyama and SF worldview supervisor Toh Enjoe, has certainly piqued fans' interest, promising a fresh take on the Gundam universe. We'll just have to wait for more intel from the official channels!
