Tom Holland on MCU Symbiote Suit Challenge: Admits 'Marvel's Spider-Man 2' Is a Tough Act to Follow

Tom Holland recently appeared on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, where he discussed the possibility of Spider-Man donning the black symbiote suit in the MCU's future. During the interview, he first praised Tobey Maguire's black suit in "Spider-Man 3" but admitted that Insomniac Games' depiction of the symbiote in "Marvel's Spider-Man 2" was so exceptional that it has raised the bar for a live-action adaptation.

"I think if we were to use the black suit in a future Spider-Man movie, I honestly don't know how I would tackle that challenge," Holland stated. "They did such a good job in 'Marvel's Spider-Man 2.' I don't know how you would make a suit that's similar to the game version without using CGI. I don't know how you would do it."

There has long been a debate over whether the symbiote suit should have a fabric-like texture or a more viscous, slick alien appearance. If the MCU were to adopt the game's direction, it would undoubtedly require extensive CG assistance. However, Holland's previous Spider-Man suits have faced criticism for being overly enhanced with digital effects, which some felt detracted from the texture of the practical costume.

Looking at the details of the suit from the end of "Spider-Man: No Way Home," it's clear the design intentionally preserved details like fabric wrinkles, the outline of his ears, and his eyes behind the mask's lenses, re-emphasizing the tangible aspects of a physical suit.

It remains uncertain when the symbiote will officially find Peter Parker, but the ending of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" already saw Tom Hardy's Venom leave a piece of the symbiote behind in the MCU. This sets up the possibility for Peter to acquire the black suit in "Avengers: Secret Wars," mirroring the comics. However, it's worth noting that Marvel Studios doesn't always follow the source material exactly, so the suit's ultimate introduction could still be different.
