Widely regarded as Japan’s first professional fighting game player, Daigo Umehara is revered by players around the world and remains one of the fighting game community’s defining competitors.
Now, his story is heading to the big screen in his first feature-length solo documentary. Titled ReBEAST: Daigo Umehara, Betting His Life on 1/60 of a Second, the film will open in theaters across Japan on January 29, 2027.

This marks the first feature documentary to follow Umehara over an extended period. Built around the tagline “Victory Is Decided in Just 1/60 of a Second”, the film tracks his relentless pursuit of the highest level of competition while revealing a side of the legendary player rarely seen by the public.
The documentary is produced by SAMANSA, the company behind a short-film streaming service, and marks its first venture into feature filmmaking. The cameras capture Umehara as he stands today after more than 20 years of competing in the unforgiving world of fighting games.
Fighting games commonly run at 60 fps, processing visuals and player actions across 60 frames every second. A difference of just one frame—1/60 of a second—in judgment or execution can determine the outcome of an entire match. The “1/60 of a second” in the film’s title symbolizes a competitive world where victory and defeat can hinge on a single split-second decision.

In 2004, Umehara pulled off a dramatic comeback at Evo, one of the world’s biggest fighting game tournaments. The sequence became known as Evo Moment 37, an iconic showdown recognized by fighting game fans around the globe. Umehara went on to deliver countless unforgettable tournament moments, eventually becoming an esports star whose fame extended far beyond the fighting game community.
But ReBEAST is not simply a retrospective about Umehara’s past achievements. The story begins as he joins professional esports team REJECT and steps into an entirely new environment. After spending years competing as an individual, Umehara must now learn to fight alongside his teammates. He faces a different approach to competition, mounting pressure to win, and the frustration of repeatedly falling short of the results he wants. Throughout it all, the cameras document his attempt to confront his own limits. After building a glittering career and earning the title of “legend,” why does Umehara continue to seek out new battles?
The film captures more than victories. It also documents defeat, personal struggle, and the never-ending process of challenging oneself as Umehara once again comes face-to-face with who he is as a professional competitor. Members of REJECT appear alongside Aru, the veteran commentator who has followed the fighting game scene for years. From team activities and tournament preparation to candid expressions away from the competition floor, the documentary reveals the person Umehara is today—far beyond the familiar public image built around his name.
