After directing the fifth through eighth "Mission: Impossible" movies back-to-back, Christopher McQuarrie (pictured below) is wasting no time lining up his next projects. He already has a live-action "Battlefield" movie and a third "Conan the Barbarian" film in development. Before either begins production, however, McQuarrie has signed on to direct another project—an original, currently untitled thriller that has already found its star.

Deadline reports that McQuarrie will direct the untitled thriller for Amazon MGM Studios, with Denzel Washington set to star. The screenplay comes from writing partners Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner, and the film is scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
Washington will play a former police detective serving a life sentence who is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. With only six months to live, he is granted compassionate release and returns to the estranged daughter he left behind and the grandson he never knew existed. He wants nothing more than to make amends and bury his troubled past—but his past refuses to let him go.
