Released in 2023, Godzilla Minus One grossed approximately US$113 million worldwide and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. With its sequel, Godzilla -0.0, approaching release, director Takashi Yamazaki recently spoke with British film magazine Empire about the new movie's creative DNA. Drawing inspiration from James Cameron's Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Yamazaki hopes to build on the original while taking its characters and emotional stakes even further.

"I have to give credit to James Cameron," Yamazaki said, explaining that Cameron excels at finding a fresh angle in an original story and then digging deeper. "His sequels often take a slightly different approach while remaining rooted in the foundation established by the first film. I've always wondered why his sequels manage to surpass the originals in so many ways."
As for how Godzilla -0.0 will continue the story, Yamazaki revealed that the sequel will not only expand the scale of the monster-fueled destruction but also shift its focus from Koichi Shikishima as an individual to the family he has formed with Noriko and Akiko.
The first film followed Shikishima as he struggled with wartime guilt and gradually forged a bond with Noriko and Akiko amid the battle against Godzilla. The sequel will explore how this newly formed family confronts another crisis.

"Shifting from Shikishima as an individual to the entire family is the different direction Godzilla -0.0 takes," Yamazaki explained. He also sees parallels between the Shikishima family's rebuilding efforts and Japan's postwar recovery. "In Godzilla -0.0, both the country and the Shikishima family are beginning to recover. In a sense, they are gradually moving closer to 'zero.' But then a new threat emerges, ready to take away everything they have worked so hard to build."
The sequel will continue the first film's exploration of postwar Japanese society, using changes in the family's everyday life to reflect the country's wider recovery.
Godzilla -0.0 is scheduled to debut in IMAX theaters in Japan on November 3, 2026, followed by its release in Taiwan, North America, and other markets on November 6.
