WETA Workshop, the world-renowned special effects company for television and film, recently unveiled its latest product from "The Hobbit" film series: the "SMAUG THE FIRE-DRAKE" 1/100 scale diorama statue! Pre-orders are scheduled to open on the WETA official website from June 8 to July 6, 2022 (PDT), and will be produced as a Made-to-Order, limited release.
In the story of "The Hobbit" films, Smaug, the great dragon of Middle-earth, occupied the Lonely Mountain and greedily guarded every treasure. He possessed not only immense intelligence, keen senses, and a cunning personality, but also terrifying fire-breathing abilities, which were his most threatening aspect. Although he met a dramatic end at the hands of the human archer Bard's Black Arrow, Smaug truly symbolized fire and death.
This 1/100 scale three-dimensional "Smaug the Fire-Drake" statue stands an impressive 88 cm tall and is crafted from Polystone. It captures Smaug in a roaring pose atop a colossal dwarf statue, with his highly impactful wings being truly stunning. The intricate vein patterns on the wings, the organic gradient colors, and the curvature of his neck all infuse this piece with a realistic, living presence! The tail wrapped around the head of the dwarf stone statue is also quite intriguing, as if echoing the film's setting and Smaug's role as the greatest threat to the dwarves. The base features not only the meticulously sculpted giant statue but also trees and a river, further enhancing its completeness.
