The glory of JRPGs returns once more! SQUARE ENIX's RPG 'Octopath Traveler' announced at last night's September 13th Nintendo Direct that its sequel, 'Octopath Traveler II,' will launch on February 24, 2023, across major platforms including Switch, PS4, PS5, and Steam!
'Octopath Traveler' first launched on the Nintendo Switch in 2018. Its visuals, featuring unique 2D pixel art characters blended with 3D polygonal backgrounds and rendered with high-quality lighting, created what is known as the "HD-2D" style. This visually stunning approach garnered widespread praise from players. This success subsequently inspired a series of remakes and new games to adopt this distinctive style. Its engaging combat system and the unique gameplay structure of following eight distinct character stories also captivated many players, leading to the first installment surpassing three million units shipped (including digital downloads).
The sequel, slated for release in February 2023, will be available on multiple gaming platforms simultaneously, no longer exclusive to the Nintendo Switch. This is fantastic news for players on other consoles and PC. The game will once again feature the familiar HD-2D presentation, and this time, too, there will be eight charming characters. Players can choose one to start as their protagonist, then gradually encounter and recruit the other characters as companions.
The sequel, 'Octopath Traveler II,' introduces a new element: a day-night cycle. With a single button press, not only do the townscapes change, but characters' path actions also differ. For example, the warrior character Hikari's daytime skill is "Challenge" (試合), allowing him to duel others, while at night it transforms into "Bribe" (買収), enabling him to exchange money for information with NPCs. Each character will have different special abilities for day and night. Furthermore, a new "Latent Power" (底力) mechanic has been added to combat, and this installment also features the ability to sail by boat. JRPG fans are sure to be thrilled and eagerly anticipate the arrival of this sequel.
