Renowned Taiwanese streamers Beryl and Eggroll recently took to social media to share their new, special-edition sneakers with their vast fanbase. While their styles differ, both showcased the shoes in their own unique ways, highlighting the model's incredible versatility. This naturally sparked curiosity about the brand and the story behind these eye-catching kicks.
After a little digging, it was revealed that these shoes are a special collaboration between Onitsuka Tiger and the anime "Urusei Yatsura"! The upper boldly features the iconic tiger stripes, symbolizing both Onitsuka Tiger and Urusei Yatsura, making them both fashionable and incredibly eye-catching.
Founded in 1949, Onitsuka Tiger's brand spirit is defined by the fusion of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and modern style. With a mission to bring its detailed, high-quality designs to a global audience, the brand has graced the runways of Milan Fashion Week multiple times, presenting a new fashion philosophy that combines avant-garde forms with tradition.
This latest collaboration is with "Urusei Yatsura," a work by the famous Japanese manga artist Rumiko Takahashi. The series was a cultural phenomenon in the 70s and 80s and was Takahashi's breakout work. Known as the "Queen of Manga," her other masterpiece, "Inuyasha," is also a beloved classic. The story of Urusei Yatsura follows Ataru Moroboshi, the unluckiest high school student on Earth, whose life is turned upside down when he meets Lum, a beautiful alien Oni princess, sparking a romantic and chaotic love story.
After its limited release at the end of October, the collaboration model sold out almost instantly at the Taipei 101 flagship store and on the official website. A Second Collaboration with Street Fighter
In fact, this isn't Onitsuka Tiger's first venture into the ACG world. Back in 2018, the brand joined forces with "Street Fighter V" to create a collaboration sneaker. Partnering with Capcom's classic game, the collaboration featured Chun-Li and resulted in a special edition of the iconic MEXICO 66 SD in her signature yellow and blue colorway. The upper cleverly incorporated the dragon pattern from Chun-Li's original costume sash, and the heel tab was adorned with the Onitsuka Tiger and Street Fighter logos.

The Street Fighter collaboration project went even further, specially commissioning renowned Japanese manga artist Masakazu Katsura to create key visual illustrations, offering a fresh interpretation of Chun-Li's image. Additionally, a diverse group of artists with unique personal styles were invited to reimagine the classic video game character. The project even enlisted fashion icon Kyary Pamyu Pamyu for a promotional video, bringing together the worlds of fashion, manga, esports, and art for a grand celebration!

This year, Onitsuka Tiger and Capcom have teamed up for a second time. In this new collaboration, Chun-Li sports the brand's classic MEXICO 66, while the new character Kimberly dons the trendy DELECITY model. Collaboration merchandise for both characters is set to be released in the first half of 2023. Notably, Thai comic artist Wisut Ponnimit has contributed adorable illustrations featuring his world-famous character, Mamuang-chan, adding even more charm to this partnership. Crafting Official Uniforms for a World Esports Championship
Esports has become a significant part of daily entertainment for many.
