Japan's BANDAI SPIRITS Company's HOBBY Division's robot model kit『HG (High Grade)』series is set to release its latest product from the anime "Mashin Hero Wataru", the "HG Ryujinmaru", on July 15, 2023. Today, the model's box art and prototype images have been revealed, offering a closer look at the actual parts' molded colors and the articulation of its joints.
When first announced, this "HG Ryujinmaru" was highlighted for its significant restoration of the anime's refined design and its highly flexible articulation. Produced using Bandai's most advanced color separation and part division technology, the parts are composed of multiple molded colors including gold, white, blue, red, clear red, and clear green, allowing for the recreation of the character's colors without the need for stickers. Even the dragon crest pattern on the shoulder armor features independent parts, which is incredibly convenient for modelers who wish to paint it themselves, saving them from a long struggle with masking tools.
Firstly, looking at the overall color separation and part division, as demonstrated in the previously released promotional video, the "HG Ryujinmaru" utilizes a relatively simple assembly method and fewer parts to achieve its prominent color separation and articulation. The clear green eyes, clear red forehead, and chest magatama all enhance the overall texture, allowing for the cool appearance from the anime to be reproduced simply by panel lining the gold and white parts.
Even more appealing is the articulation design of each joint. Breaking away from the past impression of SD proportions lacking articulation, the design inherits features from the previous two releases, "Chou Mashin Ryujinmaru" and "Shinsei Ryujinmaru", allowing Ryujinmaru to achieve flexible articulation while maintaining its aesthetic integrity.
The dragon fangs on both sides of the shoulder armor can flip outwards to expand space, revealing an extendable articulation axis. The chest armor on both sides can rotate with the shoulder joints, increasing the vertical and horizontal bending angles of the arms, allowing for poses such as drawing the sword from the back, or raising both hands overhead to perform the special move "Toryuken". Furthermore, the hip joints on both sides can be pulled outwards to expand the angle for side leg raises, and combined with the interlocking mechanism of the knee armor and joints, cool leg poses can be achieved, even a split-leg high kick!
