Danish building-block brand LEGO has unveiled the LEGO Ideas 40889 Build, Paint and Play! set, recreating a scale model builder’s familiar assembly and painting station in brick form. The miniature workbench comes loaded with hobby essentials, including nippers, a parts sprue, glue, paints and brushes, plus a classic Space astronaut minifigure. Built with 158 pieces, this limited-edition gift-with-purchase launches October 28, 2026, and will be free with qualifying purchases of $130 or more.
The project was originally created by fan designer Doomslizer for the 2025 LEGO Ideas Build Your Hobby challenge. After taking the grand prize, the design was selected for production as an official set. Inspired by the everyday routine of scale model builders, the brick-built workbench features a green cutting mat, nippers, glue, paint containers, brushes and decal sheets. The paint containers even display actual LEGO color names and identification numbers. Anyone who regularly builds Gundam kits or other scale models should feel right at home.
The set also includes a teal LEGO Classic Space astronaut minifigure previously featured in the LEGO Ideas 21358 Minifigure Vending Machine. A sprue on the workbench holds a light bluish gray helmet and air tanks, recreating the process of clipping parts from a runner and assembling the finished model. There is even a tiny pink frog tucked into the scene, adding an extra playful touch to the miniature hobby station.
